The Peloponnese and Delphi

Our first stop on our Greece road trip is the ancient ruins of the Citadel of Mycenae. We are impressed here by the unique egg shaped domes of the tombs (Tholos tombs). There is also an interesting sample of writing from ~1500 BC in the site archeological museum. After yet another taverna lunch of Slovaki and Mosaka we head on the winding Mountain Road through the picturesque port town of Nafplio (we loved this spot) and across to Olympia.

Its here where the Olympics originated and where the Olympic flame is lit. We visit the museum first to get a better understanding of how it once all looked before heading to the actual site and staring at more old piles of rubble.

The next day we take a 5hour drive to Delphi. Delphi rests on a dramatic mountainside with views to the sea and surrounding olive grove valleys. The drawcard is the nearby ancient site (Ancient Delphi & the Sanctuary of Apollo) which is another olympics arena but more specifically for artists and musicians. The Delphi Museum nearby is also another good source for picturing the site as it once was.

Some driving tips for Greece I have picked up

1. If its a two lane highway you should drive on the shoulder wherever possible so cars speeding can pass you without crossing the median. Everyone does this.
2. If you can't see around a narrow bend - honk your horn lightly and proceed at full speed.
3. Tourist Coaches ALWAYS have right of way.
4. If you see someone you know - stop your car alongside theirs and have a long chat while you block all traffic - it is your right in Greece.
