Jordan Day 4: Madaba to Petra

Today we made our way to Petra via Wadi Mujib. Unfortunately there was a major miscommunication with our Egyptian travel agent – much to my devastation and after hours of driving, we arrived at the top of a gorge ... it did have spectacular views but of the canyon below, the one we were meant to be trekking!!!! At this point I realised there was no way we had time to drive to the bottom of that gorge to do the walk and get to Petra in the same day. Turns out we went the Kings Highway past the Wadi Mujib gorge and not the Dead Sea highway to the Wadi Mujib Nature Reserve.

After that we went to Karak, an ancient crusader castle (but I was too bitter to enjoy that). Then a surprise stop at Shobak Castle, a remote ruin on top of a hill – that I really enjoyed.

After leaving Madaba at 9am we finally arrived in Petra at 3pm. Checked into the Edom Hotel, only a 2 minute walk from the entrance to Petra. We headed up the hill into the main part of town for a look around and the next day’s supplies, had diner and an early nights sleeps for our big day ahead.
